Playing PlayStation 5 games on Xbox hardware may sound impossible, but a new emulation project is making it happen. PS5 emulation on Xbox Series X is now possible through Xbox Developer Mode, with Astro Bot already running on the console.

However, this is still an early experiment. The performance is limited, and players should not expect a smooth gaming experience just yet.

How Does PS5 Emulation Work on Xbox Series X?

The project uses KytyPS5, a PlayStation 5 emulator originally developed for PC. Developer and emulator contributor @maccosmo has worked on a version that can run on Xbox Series X through Developer Mode as a Universal Windows Platform (UWP) application.

The Xbox version includes a Direct3D 12 renderer and technology that translates shaders into a format the hardware can process. This allows the emulator to handle parts of the software designed for PlayStation hardware.

Although this is an impressive technical achievement, running a game does not mean it is fully playable. The emulator still has many performance and compatibility challenges to overcome.

Astro Bot Runs at Around 10 FPS

One of the most interesting demonstrations involves Astro Bot, a popular PlayStation exclusive. The game can now boot on Xbox Series X through the emulator, but its current performance is far from ideal.

According to the reported demonstration, Astro Bot runs at around 10 frames per second (FPS) on Xbox Series X. That is too slow for the smooth experience most players expect from a modern platform game.

The PC version of KytyPS5 has shown stronger results with some titles. However, those results should not be confused with performance on Xbox hardware.

GameReported PC emulator performanceXbox Series X status
Astro BotMore than 60 FPS reportedAround 10 FPS
Demon’s SoulsMore than 60 FPS reportedNo equivalent performance figure provided

These figures highlight the difference between getting a game to launch and making it run well.

Could Xbox Players Eventually Play PS5 Exclusives?

The current results are limited, but the project shows how far emulation technology can go. Future improvements could make some games run better as developers improve compatibility and reduce the performance cost of translating code.

For Xbox owners interested in PlayStation exclusives, the idea is certainly exciting. Games such as Astro Bot could attract players who prefer Xbox hardware but want to explore titles available on other platforms.

Still, there is no guarantee that every PS5 game will work or become playable through this method. Performance will depend on the game, emulator development and technical limitations.

Is PS5 Emulation on Xbox Worth Watching?

For now, PS5 emulation on Xbox Series X is more of a technical experiment than a practical way to play PlayStation games. Running Astro Bot at around 10 FPS shows that significant work remains.

Even so, the project is worth following because it demonstrates what dedicated emulator developers can achieve. If performance improves over time, this experiment could become an even more interesting development in console gaming.
