Nintendo has finally revealed the next big 2D adventure starring Samus Aran. Metroid Ravenous release date is set for January 28, 2027, and the game is coming to the Nintendo Switch 2. The announcement arrives five years after Metroid Dread, giving fans a new reason to return to the classic side-scrolling world of Metroid.

From the first trailer, Metroid Ravenous looks darker, stranger and more focused on horror than previous 2D games. It also appears to introduce a major new ability that could change how Samus fights her enemies.

What Is Metroid Ravenous About?

The trailer begins with Samus explaining that she has been attacked by mysterious and stylish-looking enemies. She is then thrown deep underground and must find a way back to the surface.

As expected from a Metroid game, Samus seems to have lost some of her abilities. Players will likely need to explore the underground areas, discover new upgrades and slowly unlock paths that were previously impossible to reach.

However, this time Samus has something completely different on her side.

She appears to be able to absorb powers from certain enemies. This ability could become one of the most important parts of the game. Instead of simply defeating enemies, players may have to think about which powers can be taken from them and how those abilities can be used later.

Samus Could Be Embracing Her Metroid Side

The new power system is particularly interesting because it connects to the series’ long-running Metroid theme. Metroids are known for absorbing energy from other creatures, while Samus has spent much of the series fighting them.

Now, Metroid Ravenous seems to turn that idea around.

Samus may be able to take abilities from her enemies and use them against other threats. This could add a fresh layer to exploration and combat while making the character feel different from previous 2D adventures.

The trailer also has several moments that may remind players of the dangerous E.M.M.I. encounters from Metroid Dread. It is still unclear whether Ravenous will introduce a similar enemy type, but the game certainly seems interested in creating tension and fear.

A New 2D Metroid Adventure

Metroid Ravenous will arrive a little over a year after Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. While that game continued the first-person Metroid Prime formula, Ravenous returns to the side-scrolling style that made Metroid Dread so popular.

That makes the new game especially exciting for fans who prefer traditional 2D Metroid gameplay.

Nintendo has not revealed every detail yet, so questions remain about the story, enemies, upgrades and exactly how Samus’ new ability will work. Still, the early footage suggests that Nintendo is willing to experiment while keeping the core exploration and action that defines the series.

With the Metroid Ravenous release date only a short distance away, fans will not have to wait too long to see whether Samus’ newest adventure can live up to the high standard set by Metroid Dread.
